The Audi A5 Custom Steering Wheel Guide

How to specify a custom steering wheel for an Audi A5, S5 or RS5 from B8 to B10: fitment checks, the functions you can keep, materials and installation.

The A5 sits between Audi's sensible saloons and its performance models, and owners tend to keep it that way. It is a coupé or Sportback used for real journeys, not a weekend toy. That means the wheel gathers steady wear rather than dramatic wear, and the shine appears gradually. A custom Audi A5 steering wheel replaces that surface while leaving a tidy cabin exactly as it is.

Which A5 You Have

The A5 name covers two generations and three body styles, and the wheel changed along the way. Find your row below, then let us verify the detail.

ChassisModel and typical yearsWhat usually matters
B8A5 and S5, 2007 to 2016Older button frame and a different airbag connector
B9A5, S5 and RS5, 2016 to 2024MMI controls changed partway through production
B10A5, 2024 onwardsNewest generation, different centre and spoke layout
CabrioletSame generationsIdentical wheel, but the switch set can differ

An Audi A5 steering wheel cannot be shared between those generations. Coupé, Sportback and Cabriolet do share a wheel within one generation, which keeps things simple. Left-hand and right-hand drive cars can still differ, so tell us which one you own.

Why A5 Owners Refresh the Rim

These cars cover distance without fuss. For a car used this way, an Audi A5 steering wheel is the part worth renewing. A daily commute plus the occasional long weekend adds up, and the leather at nine and three goes smooth long before anything else looks worn. Because the rest of an Audi cabin ages well, that single patch draws the eye.

Temperature and grip guide the material. Perforated Valcona stays comfortable in summer and warms quickly with the heater on. Matte forged carbon suits the upper and lower rim, where hands never rest. Bronze stitching is the detail that lifts a dark cabin without becoming loud.

Finishes for a Coupé Cabin

Four finishes cover almost every A5 order we build. Each Audi A5 steering wheel starts from how the car is used. The grid compares how each behaves over steady daily use.

Matte Forged Carbon

Forged carbon shows a marbled pattern rather than a woven one, and the matte coat keeps reflections down. It hides marks far better than a gloss finish, which suits a car that lives outdoors. Use it along the upper and lower rim and leave the grip areas to leather.

Perforated Black Valcona

Valcona is the hide Audi fits itself, so a wheel trimmed in it never looks added. Perforations add ventilation exactly where the palms sit, and a balm twice a year keeps the surface supple.

Smooth Valcona

Smooth Valcona is the softest option over a long drive and the simplest to keep clean. A damp cloth handles most of what daily use brings.

Alcantara Grips

Alcantara gives the strongest grip and reflects the least light. Bare hands leave oils in the nap, so a gentle brush every few weeks keeps it looking right.

How to Confirm Your A5 Fitment

Four items settle most enquiries. Provide the chassis number and the full options list. Add a photograph taken in daylight, and another of the rear without the airbag. Whether an Audi A5 steering wheel matches your car rests on those details rather than on the badge.

The images show us the spoke profile, the button frame and the plug type. MMI switchgear changed during the B9 run, so the options list carries real weight. Nothing is cut until the match is confirmed, and we will ask for a sharper photograph rather than guess.

Buttons and Paddles After the Swap

A working switch should stay working. We build on the factory frame and wiring that is already there.

FunctionTypical outcome
AirbagOriginal module normally reused; cover built to suit it
Multifunction buttonsRetained when the original button frame is reused
Paddle shiftersRetained on S tronic cars that have them
Heated rimDepends on the heating element and trim; confirm first
Driver assistanceDepends on the hands-on detection fitted to the original wheel

Two items hide behind the rim and each needs its own photograph. One is the heating mat, and the other is the hands-on sensor the assistance systems rely on.

Your Wheel or a Replacement

Rebuilding your own wheel leaves the electronics exactly as Audi assembled them. The frame, the loom and the paddles all stay standard, which is the safer route on a newer B10.

A fresh core is the other option, and your factory wheel stays boxed up. Keeping the original also gives you a spare if the car is ever returned to standard. It suits a leased car that must return to standard. On a B8, used wheels are plentiful, so a donor is usually cheaper.

Forged Carbon and Perforated Valcona

Pairing matte forged carbon with perforated Valcona is the combination that suits an A5 best. The carbon runs along the upper and lower rim, and the perforated hide covers the grips. Bronze stitching then links the wheel to the rest of the trim.

Round Rim or Flat Bottom

A round rim keeps the wheel even through every input, which suits a car used mainly for touring. A flat lower section frees a little knee room and matches the S line look. Neither shape alters the steering itself, so choose on comfort and appearance. If two people share the car, agree on the shape first, because the rim is cut to whatever you specify.

Workshop Steps and Airbag Care

An airbag is involved, so the work belongs with someone qualified. Disconnect the battery and let the car go to sleep completely before loosening anything. Follow Audi procedure for your chassis rather than a general online walkthrough. Place the module on something soft, and set the centre fastener to the figure in the workshop manual. Nothing else should be trusted for that value.

A short test drive afterwards confirms the rim is straight. Test the switches individually, plus paddles and horn. If a warning lamp remains lit, have the car scanned first.

Warranty concerns follow any change to the wheel. An aftermarket steering wheel does not automatically void a vehicle warranty under U.S. federal warranty law, but warranty coverage can still depend on whether the modification caused the specific failure being claimed.

Coding: When It May or May Not Be Required

Coding depends on the car rather than the finish. If the factory module, the loom and the vehicle-specific parts all stay in place, extra coding may be unnecessary. A module from another generation changes matters, and the control unit may then have to learn what is fitted.

Because that differs between cars, we call coding a possible step rather than a certainty. Send the chassis number plus images of both modules, and we will say if a dealer visit is likely.

Common Compatibility Problems

What goes wrong tends to repeat. A wheel from a neighbouring generation often shares the badge but not the button frame. A heated rim on a car that never had one leaves an unused plug and a switch doing nothing. The opposite error appears just as often. Assistance systems depend on sensing hardware inside the factory rim, so replacing it can raise messages. A cover shaped for an S5 airbag arriving on a standard A5 is the quiet cosmetic failure. The four checks above clear all of them.

Order Checklist

  • Chassis number and model year, read from the car rather than the papers.
  • The full options list, including any heated wheel or assistance pack.
  • A daylight photograph of the wheel face.
  • A photograph of its rear with the airbag out, taken by a technician.
  • The presence of paddles, a heated rim or multifunction buttons.
  • Coupé, Sportback or Cabriolet.
  • Left-hand or right-hand drive.
  • A round rim, or a flat-bottom one.
  • The materials you have chosen, and where each one goes.
  • A rebuild of your own wheel, or a newly made core.

A5 Owner Questions

Will one wheel fit a B9 and a B10?

No. Their centres and button clusters differ, so each car needs its own build even when the materials match.

Can the S tronic paddles be retained?

Yes, provided the original wheel carries them. Tell us which type is fitted and we will confirm compatibility first.

Is the heated rim kept?

Where the factory fitted a heated rim, usually yes. It depends on matching the matting, which we confirm from photographs.

Do you need my original wheel?

Only for a donor build. A fresh core leaves your original with you, which suits a leased car.

How long does the process take?

Allow about ten to fifteen working days to build, then fifteen to twenty for delivery. Budget twenty-five to thirty-five days from the order date.

Is a flat lower rim awkward?

Not in everyday use. It sits at six o'clock and stays out of the way.
